Some Questions for You to Think About...
1. War
Saving Private Ryan talks about the WWII. The movie starts by a scene in the Normandy American Cemetery where the soldiers of the Allied Nations were buried. The next section flashes back to 1944 when the rangers rush to Omaha beach, Normandy of France. This day is also known as the D-Day.
Question: In the movie, Miller talked about rationalization of the choice of killing people in the war. He said it was worth if killing one person for saving 10 or more people’s lives. Do you agree with him? Why or why not? Do you think war is the best solution to save people’s lives? Why? If not, what is the best solution?
2. Brotherhood
Private Ryan had 3 brothers: Dan, Sean and Peter, who all died in the battlefields. At home, he had 3 brothers. At war, he got thousands of brothers. After Ryan heard about the deaths of his brothers, he chose to stay with his ‘other brothers’ because he believed this was the best thing he should do. This also applies to Miller and his comrades, who put trust in each other and risked their lives for each others.
Question: Do you any ‘brother/ sister’ like that? What would you do if your ‘brother/ sister’ is in great trouble, such as getting lost in the forest at night?
3. Mother
The war separated young men from their wives, lovers, family and friends. In the movie, General Marshall initiated the mission of getting Private Ryan home in hope of making a little compensation to his mother for the tragic loss of her other three sons. Before Wade died, he also cried out loud for his mother. Mother is not only a person but also associated with love, home, family and life purpose.
Question: How is your relationship with your mother? How often do you talk with her? Do you want to talk with her more often than now? Why or why not?
4. Mission & Obedience
Miller and his comrades’ mission at the beginning was to win the war. Later, when a public relations mission was assigned to Miller, their mission had changed to rescue Private Ryan. Since then, Miller’s comrades argued with Miller from time to time about the worthiness of risking their lives for one particular person. Miller said this was the mission from the top in the Army and they as subordinates have to follow what was said from above.
Question: Miller and his comrades had risked their lives for several times on their way to find Ryan. Will you still follow the mission? If yes, what would you do or say to convince others to follow the mission? If no, what would you do or say to convince Miller to skip the mission?
5. Rules
In the movie, Upham stood up to prevent Caparzo from taking the French girl away. Later, he stood up again to prevent his comrades from killing the German soldier, who was a POW (Prisoner of War). His argument was “it is not right to do. We’ve got rules.”
Question: From these two incidents, Upham was found to be a rigid person who sticks to rules. If you discover that your best friend has just stolen a pack of chocolate at the supermarket, would you tell the shop about that? Why or why not?
6. Coward or Hero?
In several incidents, Upham was shown to be a coward. He covered his ears when the wall was blasted. He hid himself from the sites where others were fighting hard. On the contrary, Miller, Horvath, Caparzo, Reiben, Jackson, Mellish and Wade showed their courage in many places.
Question: What does coward mean to you? What does a coward do? What does hero mean to you? What does a hero do? Which one do you want to be, a coward or a hero?
7. Death & Sacrifice
The soldiers risked their lives for the people in France. Miller and his comrades risked their lives for Ryan. Thousands of people were killed during the war. Many of them died for a good reason (defending or freeing the places and people from oppression) while a few of them just died for silly reasons (the plane clashed because it was too heavy).
Question: Under what circumstances will you be willing to die for one person only?
8. Life Mission
When Miller was about to die, the dying Miller’s last words to Ryan were, “Earn this.” He charged Ryan with a life mission that he hoped he could be living well and live life to the fullest.
Question: What is your life mission? Why do you have such a life mission? How far have you achieved your life mission?
